How to Prevent Peach Leaf Curl

To protect your peach tree from Peach Leaf Curl, you must spray proactively while the tree is dormant (completely bare of leaves). If you see the pink flower buds or green leaves emerging in the spring, it is too late to spray, and the fungus cannot be treated.

What Spray to Use

You need a strong fungicide. Standard organic orchard sprays like Neem oil are not strong enough to stop Peach Leaf Curl. Liquid Copper Fungicide is the most common organic option. Mix the copper with a horticultural oil (neem oil can be used) or a commercial organic "sticker" product. This helps the copper stick to the tree and prevents heavy winter rain from washing it off.

Here is the highly effective 3-spray schedule:

1. Late November (After Leaf Drop)

  • Timing: Right after the tree drops all its leaves in late autumn.

  • Purpose: Kills the fungal spores overwintering on the bark and buds before the winter rains wash them into the cracks. [1, 2, 3]

2. Early January (Mid-Winter)

  • Timing: Around New Year’s Day or during a dry spell in early January.

  • Purpose: Reinforces protection during the peak of our foggy, rainy winter season.

3. Early February (Bud Swell)

  • Timing: Just as the flower buds begin to swell and show a tiny hint of pink color, but before the blossoms actually open.

  • Purpose: The most critical spray. It creates a final protective shield right before the tree starts active growth. Do not spray open flowers, or you will harm bees. [1, 2, 3]

Application Tips

  • Spray on a dry day: Ensure there is no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours.

  • Coat the entire tree: Spray until the trunk, branches, and tiny twigs are completely dripping wet.
